Democratic Action is a grassroots non-profit organization working since 1999 to improve the quality of life of marginalized tribal communities in Nabarangpur, Odisha. Beginning with supplementary nutrition support for tribal children in Ponduguda village, the organization has expanded to 200 villages across three blocks, focusing on sustainable livelihoods through millet cultivation, improved farming practices, and market linkages; environment and climate resilience through natural resource management; women’s empowerment via SHGs, leadership and financial literacy; better health and nutrition for mothers, children, and adolescent girls; quality education through early childhood learning and adult literacy; and youth employability through vocational and digital skills. Community structures such as Mahila Sanghas and Yuvak Sanghas promote savings, literacy, sports, culture, and address social issues like addiction, child marriage, and girls’ education. Guided by the belief that “Serving fellow beings is worshiping God”, Democratic Action engages closely with Panchayats, schools, health centers, and government systems to empower vulnerable Scheduled Tribe and Dalit communities facing displacement, drought, and loss of traditional livelihoods.
